Explore the problem of suffering, the effects of suffering on the personality, ways we can help others with suffering, and ways we can help those who help others with suffering. We look at the relationship of suffering to ideas about fate and destiny. Various depth psychological approaches to suffering are compared to the traditional diagnostic approach found in mainstream psychiatry and psychology. We look at some of the traditional spiritual approaches to suffering and contrast these with a psychological approach. We also discuss the suffering produced by illness, by cruelty to others, and by deliberate torture.
