Central to the human condition is the quality of yearning: yearning for connection, for reassurance, for homecoming; and yet the on-going dilemma of reflective people is just as often separation, deeper doubt, more estrangement. The poets we will read range from the so-called “Holy Sonnets” of Shakespeare’s contemporary “Mad Jack” Donne, to the “Terrible Sonnets” of nineteenth century priest Gerard Manley Hopkins, to the continuing effort of modernist poets to track the sacred in the precincts of this secular world.
