Description

Instructor: James Hollis, PhD

We all suffer wrenching conflicts of duty and desire. "The divided heart" is perhaps the best metaphor for the struggles that four classic nineteenth century writers embodied, identified, and to some degree resolved in the novels we will read. Through a psychological and a literary lens, we explore how the dilemmas faced by each of these novel's protagonists persist in our own lives - and how their answers might help us in addressing our own divisions.

Required reading was Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.

8 classes, instant access by MP3 download, recorded in the spring of 2014.
