Description

Triggers to Glimmers: Finding Resilience in the Work of Witnessing Trauma through Art and Engagement

Witnessing the suffering of others can shape our psychological world in profound ways. For clinicians, caregivers, artists, and anyone deeply engaged with the experiences of others, empathic engagement can lead to vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, or burnout.

This 3 hour presentation introduces an evidence-informed framework for understanding these responses and explores the concept of vicarious resilience—the growth, meaning, and renewed perspective that can emerge through witnessing the resilience of others.

Using the narrative of an artist (Sarah Sudhoff) who experienced vicarious trauma through her creative work, alongside broader examples from helping professions, participants will learn to recognize key indicators of both vicarious trauma and vicarious resilience. The session concludes with practical strategies for managing the emotional impact of trauma exposure and intentionally cultivating moments of insight, connection, and resiliency.

Sarah Sudhoff is a Cuban-American artist based in Houston, Texas. She uses data, performances, photography, prints, sound, and video to unpack the gun violence epidemic’s ongoing socio-cultural impacts, the psychological landscapes of caregiving and motherhood, sexuality and gender-based violence, and heritage and transgenerational memory.

Her work has been exhibited at Colby College Museum in Maine, Nasher Museum at Duke University in North Carolina, Blaffer Art Museum in Texas, Donggang Photo Museum in South Korea, and Pioneer Works in New York. Sudhoff completed an MFA in Photography from Parsons School of Design, New York, and a BA in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin.

Jenny Hughes, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of trauma and PTSD. As a clinician, she practices Brainspotting, EMDR, and Cognitive Processing Therapy. Jenny is the author of The PTSD Recovery Workbook and Triggers to Glimmers: A Vicarious Resilience Journal and Workbook.

As a leader in the field of vicarious trauma and resilience, Jenny serves trauma therapists, helpers, and healers as the founder of The BRAVE Trauma Therapist Collective. Jenny helps trauma therapists get their energy back and feel confident in their work again so they can end the day with something left for themselves.
