Our speaker Dan Harris
Our speaker, Dan Harris, is a former news anchor turned “self-help for smart people” author and podcaster. (He spoke at The Jung Center’s spring benefit 10 years ago to talk about his then-new book 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in my Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works.) “My whole career as a quasi-self-help-guru began with a coke-fueled panic attack on live TV,” Dan writes. “In 2004, back when I was an ABC News anchor, I lost the plot in front of 5.019 million viewers of Good Morning America. That experience led me to meditation.” Dan now hosts the 10% Happier podcast, covering meditation and all aspects of human flourishing – work, fitness, relationships, sleep, and more. “You can do this work without shaving your head, donning a loincloth, and taking up residence in a Himalayan cave,” Dan writes. “Right in the middle of your busy life, you can make change—messy, marginal, but meaningful change.”
In 2017, Dan published Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics. In 2021, after more than two decades at ABC News, he retired to pursue the happiness game full time. Dan lives outside New York City with his wife, son, and a rotating cast of rescue cats.
We are honoring The Jung Center’s Executive Director Sean Fitzpatrick for his 28 years of service, 11 of those as executive director. Sean will be leaving his role as director this summer, transitioning to The Jung Center’s McMillan Institute Scholar and Director Emeritus. During his tenure as executive director, The Jung Center has grown from serving 20,000 people each year through 150 classes and art exhibits, to serving 35,000 people around the world through classes and partnerships with more than 50 nonprofits, schools, hospitals, and businesses in Houston and beyond. We now reach people in every state and 66 countries, offering community-based mental health support outside of a clinic that is affordable, accessible, and unique to The Jung Center.
