Description
bell hooks (1952-2021), an African American activist, argues that social change happens through radical love. For bells hooks, social change means transforming society to be more equitable. Radical love is transformation through action which starts with a dialogue.
In this workshop, students will understand the history of feminism in the United States from the 1960s to the present through bell hooks’ ideas. The following topics will be covered: conscious-raising groups, the power of the sisterhood, body love, women at work, race and gender, ending violence, feminist masculinity and parenting, liberating marriage, visionary feminism, and radical love.
Bridget Fernandes is an anthropologist, lecturer, photographer, traveler, and artist. She is originally from Tennessee, taught English as a Second Language in Brazil for five years, facilitated courses at a men’s prison for eight years. Since 2011, Bridget has been at the University of Houston teaching anthropology courses with a focus on how people empower themselves to make social change. Through participating in various educational settings, Bridget believes that true learning happens through open dialogue. She expresses herself through nature photography and collaging eccentric, creative characters and has participated in intuitive painting and collage workshops.
