The Jung Center’s 2025 Spring Benefit: An Evening with Clint Smith

Tuesday, March 18, 2025

Co-Chairs

Heidi and Marcus Smith

Judy and Wayne McConnell

Honoree

Mathieu Jn Baptiste

Our speaker Clint Smith is an acclaimed writer, poet, and scholar, whose bestselling book How the Word Is Passed received the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction and was hailed by The New York Times as “an extraordinary contribution to the way we understand ourselves.” A staff writer at The Atlantic, Clint is the author of three award-winning books, including a book of poetry on the simultaneous wonder and despair of fatherhood. Clint’s writing has been published in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Poetry Magazine, The Paris Review, and elsewhere. He was raised in New Orleans, graduated (post-Hurricane Katrina) from The Awty International School in Houston, and received his PhD in Education from Harvard University.

Our honoree Mathieu Jn Baptiste seeks to connect and unite the world around him through his unique perspective, using paint and metal as his tools. Basing his art on oppressed subjects’ and populations’ unsung stories and harsh realities, Mathieu’s purpose is to give voice to the oppressed through his art. In both Houston and Haiti, Mathieu teaches art and mindfulness techniques to underserved communities.
