Imagine how we can allow our own femininity to show up and radically shape our modern world.

Description

For nearly a decade, the French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle grappled with the female form in an ever-evolving series of sculptures. Exploring social constructions – and constrictions – of the female body, these “Nana” sculptures developed from early expressions of repressed femininity into larger-than-life, ecstatic, and challenging representations of feminine power. Join us as we use the medium of collage to carry on the “Nana” series, and challenge the idea that women should not take up space. Through drawing a body and expressing ideas of body image, feminism, and femininity through collage, we’ll think critically about historical treatments of women, and imagine how we can allow our own femininity to show up and radically shape our modern world.

Bridget Fernandes, MA, is an anthropologist, lecturer, photographer, traveler, and artist. Originally from Tennessee, she taught English as a Second Language in Brazil for five years, facilitated courses at a men’s prison for eight years, and has been teaching anthropology courses with a focus on how people empower themselves to make social change at the University of Houston since 2011. Through participating in various educational settings, Bridget believes that true learning happens through open dialogue. She expresses herself through nature photography and collaging eccentric, creative characters.
