Simran Jeet Singh, PhD, grew up in South Texas wearing a turban to Little League practice. He and his brothers confronted racism daily, but despite the prejudice he faced, Simran refused to give in to negativity. Instead, he delved deep into the Sikh teachings that he grew up with, learning to seek the good in every person and situation. The Sikh tenets of love and service to others empowered Simran to forge a life of connection and a commitment to justice that have made him a national figure in the areas of equity, inclusion, and social justice.

Simran is the Executive Director for the Aspen Institute’s Religion & Society Program. He is an Atlantic Fellow for Racial Equity with Columbia University and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, and a Soros Equality Fellow with the Open Society Foundations. In 2020, TIME Magazine recognized him as one of 16 people fighting for a more equal America. Simran is the author of the bestseller The Light We Give: How Sikh Wisdom Can Transform Your Life, and the award-winning children’s book Fauja Singh Keeps Going: The True Story of the Oldest Person to Ever Run a Marathon. Simran lives with his wife and two daughters in New York City and is a loyal San Antonio Spurs fan.
