Zalman Schachter-Shalomi's 'From Age-ing to Sage-ing': A Book Study (In-Person)

Published in 1995, Zalman Schachter-Shalomi’s From Age-ing to Sage-ing was key in instigating the contemporary movement for “conscious ageing.” In contrast to the cultural view of ageing as decline, “Reb Zalman” re-envisioned elderhood as a time of spiritual growth, personal fulfillment, and social contribution. Examining “the art of life completion,” he popularized such notions as “spiritual eldering,” “life harvesting,” and the “eternity factor” – the panoramic outlook that can come with advanced years – and he extolled the role that elders might play in healing, forgiveness, mentoring, consciousness expansion, and ecological awareness. Join two members of the steering committee of The Jung Center’s Community for Conscious Aging as they explore this seminal compendium of imagination, observation and wisdom.

Ellen Bishop worked over thirty-five years supporting medical researchers who have advanced novel and disruptive biotechnology. She is interested in the contemplative arts, maintains a mindfulness meditation practice, and has completed Emory University’s Cognitively-Based Compassion teachers certification program. Her passion is to build community, while improving health and mitigating the impact of climate change through nutritional education initiatives.

Mark Ryan holds a Ph.D. from Yale University, where for 21 years he was on the faculty in American Studies and a dean of students. Subsequently, he was Professor, Dean of the Colleges, and a Director of Graduate Studies at the Universidad de las Américas, Puebla in Mexico. His writings include A Different Dimension: Reflections on the History of Transpersonal Thought and articles in the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology.
