Summary

Thomas Cole and Laura Spector | Three Tuesdays, Dec 2 - 16 | 5:30 - 7:15p CT | 15 Max Attendees | Explore angels in religious history and consider the relevance of the recent eclipse of angels in modern culture.

Description

This course will introduce students to the general topic of angels in Western culture.  Dr. Cole will briefly explore angels in religious history and explain the recent eclipse of angels in modern culture, where science has been annointed as the sole arbiter of reality. He will share his own experiences and stories of clients he works with as a Spiritual Director.  He will ask students to share their own stories or stories of others they know. He will offer Guided Meditations, discuss and explore key angel paintings from the Middle Ages up to the 20th century. Working with the artist Laura Specter, he will help students draft their own image of Jacob’s Ladder. Finally, he’ll suggest that we are entering a new era of hope and solidarity in which angels will return as models for our own angelic selves.

Dr. Thomas Cole is Emeritus Professor of Humanities in Medicine at McGovern Medical School and serves as Spiritual Director at Temple Beth Israel in Houston.

Laura Spector is an Artist-in-Residence at the McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics at UT Health.
