October Lunch & Learn | The Search for Afterlife (Hybrid) **Date Has Been Changed**

Summary
Description
Cultures worldwide and throughout history have assumed the survival of consciousness, or some element of it, after death. Dominant intellectual and scientific opinion in the modern West, however, denies its possibility, viewing consciousness as a product of neurochemical functions of the human brain: when the brain disintegrates, consciousness necessarily dissipates. Since the late 19th century, a countervailing strain of scientifically informed investigation has searched for empirical evidence of “survival,” and such evidence—perhaps explainable in other ways—has mounted in recent times. This Lunch and Learn will provide an historical overview of the search for evidence of life after death, introducing debates and ontological questions that result from the inquiry.
Mark Ryan holds a Ph.D. from Yale University, where for 21 years he was on the faculty in American Studies and a dean of students.
