Summary

Bridget Fernandes | Saturday, Sep 6 | 9:30a - 1p CT | 15 Max Attendees | Explore identity, creativity, and social critique by creating self-portrait collages inspired by Hannah Höch’s photomontage techniques, while engaging in discussion and reflection on her work and activism.

Description

This hands-on workshop invites students to explore identity, creativity, and self-expression through the art of self-portrait collage, inspired by Hannah Höch, a pioneer of photomontage and a key figure in the early 20th-century Dada movement.
Höch’s work challenged traditional gender roles and critiqued mass media, nationalism, and cultural norms. In this session, students will learn about her techniques and philosophy before creating their own collages using found images, mixed media, and personal symbolism.

Through layering, juxtaposition, and abstraction, participants will reflect on identity, representation, and social context. The workshop fosters individual expression and group discussion in a supportive environment. No prior art experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to explore. All tools and supplies will be provided.
