Description

Death and Dying in Collectivistic Cultures

Collectivism is on the individual and societal level to view oneself as interdependent and a member of a group rather than an individual being valuing independence. In collectivistic cultures, people feel that they belong to a larger in group and prioritize family and community over the individual. Family values are more central and the needs of all are considered important and even greater than the individual. Collectivistic cultures value collaboration, family and community interdependence and look at the individual as part of a larger whole. All of Asia, Africa, and Central and South America are collectivistic cultures (thus I can’t list them all) and those of the diaspora of all of those cultures (Asian Americans, Latino Americans, Africans) are a blend in terms of their collectivism.Loss of spouse or partner will also be discussed.
